Day 1: Carrying Hope into a New Year

Scripture: “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” Hebrews 6:19 Read Hebrews Chapter 6 to get the whole context

Reflection: A new year often arrives carrying a mixture of emotions. Hope and anticipation walk hand in hand with uncertainty and fear. We step forward holding memories of what has been, both the joys and the disappointments, and we wonder what the days ahead will bring.

Hope becomes essential in moments like these and in day to day life. Not the fleeting kind of hope that depends on circumstances working out the way we want, but the kind of hope that holds steady even when the future feels unclear. Hebrews 6:19 tells us this kind of hope is an anchor for the soul. It is firm, secure, and dependable. It is the hope that leads us into God’s inner sanctuary, his refuge. It also reminds me of Habakkuk 3:17-19 “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights.”

Even though life feels uncertain, even though…Yet I will praise him. This is a picture of Hope anchored/

tethered to the Lord.

An anchor only works when it is dropped. Many of us carry hope with us, but we do not fully rely on it. We keep it nearby while still gripping control, still bracing ourselves for disappointment. As you enter this new year, the question is, are you anchored/tethered to the one who is the ultimate Hope? Disappointment will surely come, hard times will arise, but hope in Christ will keep us steady when those things come.

This does not require you to have all the answers. It only asks that you place your confidence somewhere secure. Biblical hope is not a wish. It is a confident expectation rooted in the promises of God.

Reflect: What emotions are you carrying into this new year? Are they rooted in the reality of truth, or are they based on what you think will happen? Where have you been placing your hope? What would it look like to truly anchor/tether your heart to Christ?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I step into this new year, I choose to anchor my hope in You. When the waters feel uncertain, and the winds begin to shift, hold me steady in Your promises. Help me to keep my eyes focused on you and the course set before me. Remind me that you are greater, that you can see all things, and that you know all things. Remind me that I am in your hand and you won’t let go of me. Show me where I have anchored my heart to something other than you, and help me to remove anything from my heart that would draw me away from you.  Amen
