Day 3: Hope as an Anchor for the Soul
Scripture “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie… This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” Hebrews 6:18,19 re-read this section of scripture
Reflection: An anchor is designed to keep a vessel from drifting when winds and currents push against it. It holds steady when movement feels inevitable. But an anchor only works when it is actually used.
Many of us live life without fully dropping anchor. We know the promises of God. We believe or at least can say, He is faithful. Yet when storms come, we rely on our own strength, our own understanding, or our own control. We somehow forget that He is truly God and that He sees us. We forget that He loves us and that he holds us.
Hope must be attached to something secure. If it is attached to temporary things, it will drift. If it is anchored in God’s promises, it will hold firm even in the storm. This reminds me of James 1:6 “ But when you ask Him [for wisdom], be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” It is only when our faith is truly in God alone, and we have anchored our Hope to him, that we can be settled even in the tossing sea. If we find ourselves blown and tossed by the wind, then we must ask where our faith and hope lie.
There is also a beautiful truth in this image. As much as we lay hold of hope, hope also lays hold of us. God’s promises do not slip or fail. They grip our lives with strength greater than our fear.
As this year unfolds, storms may come. Winds may shift. But hope anchored in Christ will keep you steady.
Reflect Where do you notice yourself drifting instead of anchoring?
What keeps you from fully trusting God in the storm?
How can you intentionally lay hold of hope this year?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me not only carry hope, but use it. Teach me to anchor my soul in Your promises when life feels unsteady. Show me where I am trusting in self, rather than you. Amen.
